Cantaloupe & Muskmelon
Cucumis melo
Ripeness announces itself: the melon slips off the vine by itself.

Heat and dry feet
Melons want hot weather and hate wet soil. Black plastic mulch to warm the ground, good drainage and a sunny open site make a real difference in a cool spring. Do not rush planting - soil below 70F stunts them permanently.
Direct sow or transplant carefully
Direct sowing after the soil warms is simplest. If you transplant to gain time, use peat or soil-block pots and set them out before they get rootbound, because melons resent root disturbance badly.
Space and support
Vines run six to eight feet. They can be trellised to save room, but each fruit needs a sling of netting or old T-shirt once it reaches tennis-ball size or it will tear free.
Water, then ease off
Steady moisture matters while vines run and fruit sizes. As fruit approaches maturity, cut back the water - this concentrates sugars significantly. Heavy watering right before harvest gives a bland, watery melon.
Pollination
Melons need insects. Row cover protects seedlings from cucumber beetles but must come off once flowering starts. Poor fruit set in a wet season usually means pollinators were not flying.
Pests and disease
Cucumber beetles both feed and transmit bacterial wilt, which kills whole vines abruptly - control them early. Aphids spread viruses. Powdery and downy mildew arrive late, so choose resistant varieties and space for airflow.
Full slip is the signal
A ripe muskmelon separates from the vine at the slightest pressure, leaving a clean dish-shaped scar. The netting coarsens and the blossom end smells strongly sweet. If you have to cut it off, it was early - and unlike a watermelon it will soften afterwards but not get much sweeter.
Storage
Best eaten within a few days. A whole ripe melon holds about a week in the fridge, cut melon two or three days. They do not store, so plan for a glut when the vines come in.
