Danvers Carrot
Daucus carota subsp. sativus
The all-purpose carrot: tapered, strong-shouldered, and it copes with heavier ground.

The compromise that works everywhere
Danvers is the classic American maincrop carrot: a strong tapered root with broad shoulders, good yield, good storage and adequate flavour. It is not as sweet as a Nantes or as tolerant of clay as a Chantenay, but it does everything acceptably, which is why it has been grown for a hundred and fifty years.
Handles heavier soil than Nantes
The strong tapering shape and vigorous root drive through moderately heavy ground better than a blunt Nantes will. It still forks in stony or compacted soil - all carrots do - but it is more forgiving.
Germination and thinning
Two to three weeks to germinate with the surface kept constantly damp. Cover the row until seedlings appear. Thin to two inches, in the evening, removing thinnings from the bed.
Soil preparation
Loose, deep, stone-free tilth eight to ten inches down. No fresh manure - it causes forking and hairy roots. Compost from a previous season is ideal.
Even water
An inch a week. Erratic watering causes splitting; Danvers splits less than Nantes but it still happens after a downpour on dry ground.
Pests
Carrot rust fly is the significant one - insect mesh or row cover from sowing, or sow after early June to miss the first generation. Green shoulders from light exposure turn bitter, so hill soil or mulch over them.
A good storage and juicing carrot
Higher yield and a denser root than Nantes make it the better choice if you are putting up a winter supply, juicing, or cooking in quantity. The flavour improves markedly after frost.
Harvest and storage
Lift at one to one and a half inches across; larger roots hold quality better than Nantes but eventually go woody. Cut the tops off immediately. Four to six months just above freezing at high humidity - in damp sand, or left in the ground under thick straw mulch and dug through winter.
