Grape Tomato
Solanum lycopersicum
Thicker-skinned and drier than a cherry, which is exactly why it does not split and keeps for a week.

Not just a cherry with a different shape
Grape tomatoes have thicker skins, denser flesh and less juice than cherry types. That makes them noticeably crack-resistant, better travellers, and far longer keeping - a week or more on the counter. The trade-off is a less intense, less complex flavour than a good cherry like Sungold.
Indeterminate and vigorous
Juliet, Santa and most grape varieties are indeterminate and grow large - eight feet is normal. Juliet in particular is exceptionally productive and disease-tolerant, and is one of the most reliable tomatoes you can grow in a humid climate.
Support and pruning
Tall sturdy support at planting. Prune to one or two leaders if you want manageable, well-ventilated plants; leave unpruned for maximum yield and accept a thicket. Always strip the lowest twelve inches of foliage.
Plant deep and mulch
Bury two-thirds of the stem. Mulch three inches deep once soil is warm to hold moisture, keep soil off the leaves, and stabilise water supply.
Water and feed
An inch and a half a week, delivered evenly at the base. Feed at planting, at first fruit set, and every three weeks thereafter with something not heavy in nitrogen.
They hold on the vine
Unlike cherries, grape tomatoes can be left several days past ripeness without splitting or dropping, which makes them forgiving if you cannot pick every day. Whole trusses can be cut at once.
Diseases and pests
Same early blight, septoria and wilts as any tomato, though the vigorous commercial hybrids tolerate them well. Hornworms, stink bugs and aphids as usual.
Kitchen and storage
The dense flesh means they roast without collapsing into water and dehydrate excellently - a grape tomato is the best choice for oven-drying. They keep a week or more at room temperature; still do not refrigerate.
