Slicing Tomato
Solanum lycopersicum
The everyday tomato: medium-sized, round, and the type most modern disease resistance is bred into.

Determinate or indeterminate - check the tag
Slicers come in both. Determinate types (Celebrity, Mountain Fresh) stay four to five feet, set one concentrated crop, and should not be sucker-pruned. Indeterminate types (Better Boy, Big Beef, Early Girl) climb to eight feet, fruit until frost, and benefit from pruning to two leaders. Getting this wrong is the single commonest tomato mistake - it determines your support, your pruning, and when you get fruit.
Where disease resistance lives
This class carries the most modern breeding. Letter codes after the name tell you what it resists: V verticillium, F or F2 fusarium races, N nematodes, T tobacco mosaic virus, LB late blight, EB early blight. In a humid climate like ours those letters matter more than almost anything else on the tag, and they are the strongest argument for hybrids over heirlooms.
Plant deep, mulch, water at the base
Bury two-thirds of the stem. Mulch three inches deep once soil warms. Water an inch and a half a week at soil level on a consistent schedule - the mulch-plus-even-water combination prevents blossom end rot, cracking and most soil-splash disease in one move.
Feeding
Compost or a balanced fertiliser at planting, then switch to a lower-nitrogen, higher-potassium feed once the first fruit sets. Continued high nitrogen gives you a beautiful green plant and a disappointing harvest.
Strip the lower leaves
Remove all foliage from the bottom twelve inches once the plant is established, and keep removing lower leaves as they yellow. Early blight and septoria spores splash up from the soil, and this one habit delays them by weeks.
Pests
Hornworms, stink bugs, aphids and whitefly. Leave parasitised hornworms - the white cocoons are braconid wasps. Stink bug feeding causes white corky spots just under the skin, cosmetic but annoying.
Harvest
Pick at full colour with slight give, or at breaker stage if birds, squirrels and cracking are taking a toll - flavour development after breaker stage happens off the vine as well as on it. Twist gently or cut the stem.
Storage
Counter, stem side down, out of the sun, up to a week. Refrigeration below 55F permanently flattens the flavour. Excess can be frozen whole in bags and used for cooking all winter, skins slipping off under warm water.
