1 / 3Red Mulberry
Morus rubra
Seed of the native mulberry, collected from fruiting trees in this river valley.
Morus rubra is the mulberry that actually belongs in eastern North America, and one of the highest-value wildlife trees you can plant. These are seeds from our own fruiting trees, cleaned and dried.
Mulberry seed needs 60-90 days of cold, moist stratification before it will germinate - sow outside in fall and let winter do it, or refrigerate in damp sand. Seedlings are variable and the tree is dioecious, so sex and fruit quality are unknown until first bloom. That is the honest trade against a grafted tree: years slower to fruit, a fraction of the price, and every tree genetically its own.
